spring 2008
With so many exciting changes it’s hard to know where to begin and what you’ll find interesting to read. So we’ve included a little of this and that to keep you in the loop. Rest assured, we’ll continue to source and manufacture the only reclaimed and sustainable wood flooring worthy of our name.
For years, we’ve resisted engineered flooring (wood veneer over plywood platform) because until now it has inherently been a non-eco friendly product thanks to uncertified veneers, glue and finish toxicity, and off shore manufacturing. Since our customers wanted it, we decided to do something (green) about it. Now, after more than a year of development and testing, we’re proud to announce the launch of what we believe is the most eco-friendly engineered floor on the market. Paired with our reclaimed and sustainable wear layer options, we think our engineered floor is also the most beautiful!
· Wear Layer: 100% reclaimed or FSC Certified fresh sawn
· Platform: FSC certified, no VOCs or added formaldehyde
· Pre-Finish: oil & wax UV cured, all natural ingredients
· Packaging: 100% post consumer materials & water-based inks
· Sourced and manufactured in the USA in a way that’s healthy
for you and the environment
Apparently, our customers like what we’ve done. We’re presently in the throws of expanding our shop to accommodate new machinery and employees.
With so much change, it only made sense to freshen up our PMW brand identity. We’re proud to say our new logo is exactly what we hoped for: contemporary artisan, reflective of our industry and our commitment to green.
The addition of our pre-finished engineered floor also meant packaging. True to our ethos, we have it made locally from non-bleached, 100% post consumer waste cardboard and print using water-based inks.
Building Green is a PBS TV series with a mission to give homeowners a glimpse of just how easy, cost-effective, and healthy it is to be green. The show’s crew was here this past fall to film our shop and to interview Jonathan about our efforts in the green movement. Coming to your TV this summer.
Pioneer’s own Jered Slusser made a guest appearance on HGTV’s Spice Up Your Kitchen. The half-hour episode revolves around a Philadelphia row house remodel. Of course, the highlight of the rehab is our Character Select Heart Pine from the International Tractor Factory. Apparently the show’s host, Jeff Devlin, thought so too — we caught him hugging one our planks. Watch for this episode to air in late May on HGTV.
The Forest Stewardship Council recently awarded both New Energy Works and Pioneer Millworks Chain of Custody Certification in three categories. During the inspector’s initial visit, he said this was one of the easier approvals he had ever made. We believe this important designation helps us to reward growers and wood producers alike for being thoughtful in their work. Visit www.fsc.org for more info. And to keep us continuing down the path of learning, we’ve become members of the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association.
We’ve also expanded our Pioneer Millworks team. New faces bring new ideas and new ideas make us a stronger bunch. We’ve always embraced the idea of the new – and now’s a good of a time as any to brave frontiers and take on new challenges. Read about the people steering Pioneer Millworks into 2008.
